Hindustan Zinc increases renewable power consumption to 22%; Targets 70% by FY28
• Renewable power consumption increases from ~18% in FY26 to current 22% of overall power consumption
• 530 MW round-the-clock renewable power arrangement to support transition towards 70% renewable power by FY28
• Clean energy adoption supports Hindustan Zinc’s SBTi-validated Net Zero 2050 or sooner ambition
Hindustan Zinc Limited, the world's largest integrated zinc producer and one of the world's
top ten silver producers, has increased the share of renewable power in its
current overall power consumption to 22%, up from approximately 18% in FY26,
marking continued progress in its clean energy transition. The company is
progressing towards meeting approximately 70% of its overall power requirements
through renewable energy by FY28, as it scales clean energy adoption across its
mining and smelting operations.
Across its business units in Rajasthan and
Uttarakhand, Hindustan Zinc has continued to strengthen its renewable power
generation capabilities. During FY26, the company generated 892 million units
of green power, compared with 632 million units in FY25. The increase in green
power generation, along with renewable power procurement, has contributed to
the steady growth of renewable energy in the company’s overall power mix.
The company is progressing towards its ambition
of sourcing 70% of its total electricity requirements from renewable sources by
FY28. To support this target, Hindustan Zinc expanded its round-the-clock
renewable energy power delivery agreement with Serentica Renewables from 450 MW
to 530 MW. In addition, Hindustan Zinc is advancing its energy transition by
upgrading power connectivity from the state transmission network to the central
transmission utility, alongside implementing innovative in-house
projects that support a cleaner, more resilient and energy-efficient future.
Key initiatives include enhancing waste heat recovery boiler steam turbine
generation through efficiency improvements and harnessing renewable energy
through floating solar installations on water ponds
The organization’s renewable energy portfolio
combines solar, wind and energy storage solutions to enable reliable
round-the-clock clean power across the company’s operations. The arrangement is
expected to progressively increase the contribution of renewable energy to
Hindustan Zinc’s overall power mix as additional capacity is integrated.
Highlighting the company’s accelerating clean
energy transition, Mr. Amarendu Prakash, CEO, Hindustan Zinc, said “The
next chapter of growth in metals and mining will be defined by our ability to
produce more with a progressively lower environmental footprint. With renewable
power now accounting for 22% of our power consumption and our ambition to take
this to 70% by FY28, we are demonstrating that clean energy is not simply a
decarbonization lever; it is fundamental to creating a more resilient,
competitive and responsible business. By transforming the way we power our
operations, we are strengthening Hindustan Zinc for a low-carbon future while
supporting India’s journey towards energy security and a Viksit Bharat.”
These efforts form an integral part of Hindustan
Zinc's broader sustainability roadmap and support its Science Based Targets
initiative (SBTi)-validated decarbonisation pathway towards achieving Net Zero
emissions by 2050 or sooner. During the year, the company continued to
strengthen its position as a sustainability leader, building on its recognition
as the world's most sustainable metals and mining company by the S&P Global
Corporate Sustainability Assessment and its membership of the International
Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), the highest global benchmark for
responsible mining.
Hindustan Zinc, a Vedanta Group company, advances
its next phase of growth and moves towards a multi-metal future, clean energy
will remain central to its strategy of producing metals essential for India’s
growth and the global energy transition through increasingly sustainable and
responsible operations.
