Nepal’s Road Network Nears 100,000 km, But Delays and Poor Coordination Slow Progress
Nepal’s road transport network has expanded to nearly 100,000 km, managed across federal, provincial, and local governments under the federal system. The federal government is prioritizing four key east–west highways Mahendra, Postal, Mid-Hill (Pushpa Lal), and Madan Bhandari to improve national connectivity, reduce travel time, and boost economic activity. Nepal is also developing 11 north–south corridors to strengthen trade links with India and China, though some routes remain underutilized due to missing customs infrastructure. While road access now reaches all 77 district headquarters, year-round connectivity remains challenging in remote areas like Humla and Dolpa. Major delays continue due to contractor overload, weak inter-agency coordination, payment issues, material shortages, budget gaps, and natural disasters. Experts stress better planning, assured funding, and a strict bid-capacity system to speed up completion.
