According to Union minister for road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari, the pace of highways construction in the country has touched a record 33 km per day,

The ministry of road transport and highways has constructed 11,035 km of national highways so far in the current fiscal, he said.

The pace of construction has nearly trebled compared to 2014-15, when average daily construction was 12.08 kilometres.

He was optimistic and said, with another month to go, he was hopeful of achieving the construction target of 40 km per day. He said this to reporters at a press conference.

Road construction has once again picked up pace after the slowdown brought about by the Covid-19-induced lockdown, when jobless labourers had returned home, Gadkari said.

Highways construction in FY 20 stood at 10,237 km. The pace of construction slowed down during the April to July last year, with construction coming down to around 21 km per day, but picked up thereafter. Construction in FY 19 stood at 10,855 kilometre, with average daily construction at 29.74 kilometres.

The ministry of road transport and highways builds roads along with its implementing agencies National Highways Authority of India and the National Highways Development Corporation Limited.
