What are the advantages of RMC (Ready mix concrete) plants in comparison with SMC (Site mixed concrete) plants?
Ready mix concrete (RMC) is an engineered product where in all the components of concrete mix (i.e aggregates, cement, water and admixtures) are batched by weight to the required precise quantity and the desired output strength is achieved. The accuracy levels achieved are +/- 2% for aggregates and +/-1% for water cement and admixtures ensuring proper utilization of material is mixed and no wastage is left out in the process. These plants where the concrete is produced complies to IS standards in India or any international standards of weighment. The entire process is controlled by automated control systems leaving no error in manufacturing.
RMC plants produces very large quantities of specialized concrete depending upon the requirement for example, in dams, roads, metros, large scale infrastructure projects, real estate, power projects where the single pour requires high volume of concrete in a single go. Speed of construction is key in RMC operations where huge concrete quantities can be produced with strict quality control and with minimum dependency on labor. Skilled operators who monitor and operate the batching plant help in making the entire process, a success.

Site mixed concrete (SMC) are poorly handled site based concrete where volumetric batching is used for mixing the concrete. Manual labor is used to mix the concrete. Mix is not of proper homogeneity and has high variation in strengths. The control of flow of materials being manual, high variation in resultant output is found. There are high chances of over utilization or underutilization of the materials used as the accuracy level in batching and mixing are not proper. Thus, cost implication is very high. This mix can be used for only small quantities where the requirement is low, time is not a constraint and the cost of the project is very low.
Has your company envisaged new generation special green concrete products (e.g. Fly ash and GGBS. i.e Ground Granulated Blast-furnace Slag) to give more value addition to your customers as green marketing is gaining more significance day by day?
This design is there from our initial days of production. For the last twenty-two years, we have been supplying concreting equipment to create such green concrete products. In addition to this, Stetter concrete batching plants can accommodate micro silica to improve strength, fibers in concrete using admixtures. They are also being used in road projects successfully. Dams projects use temperature controlled concrete where ice is used as a partial replacement of water to reduce the output temperature of concrete. Light weight concrete can also be manufactured by our equipment.
Precast concrete is a specialty concrete which can be used for predesigned buildings / structures which can be assembled at the site minimizing time to speed up the construction drastically. We also have launched advanced concreting equipment for precast and have implemented it in many project sites.

While earlier, demand for RMC was largely seen in the metros, the industry has now grown to all parts of the country including Tier 2 and 3 cities. How does your company see this opportunity?
RMC trend is shifting to Tier 2 and 3 cities. Today, we feel that there is no necessity to explain the advantages of RMC to the end users. The customer has understood the concept and always feels better to go for a quality based product for their construction requirement. This has opened up many opportunities for ready mix concrete batching plants in these cities. Though these city areas are small and the requirement is limited, still we see a requirement of 20% of the major city requirement from Tier 2 cities and around 10-15% in Tier 3 cities. Schwing Stetter India is a clear leader of RMC segment, being the pioneer of high quality concreting equipment with proven performance along with a strong service and spares network.
With distances within the cities and now challenges to serve the scattered up country market how does your RMC retain the temperature and the quality?
Schwing Stetter India offers concreting and construction equipment to RMC companies. RMC companies use variety of admixtures for their concreting applications based on their end users' requirement. The concreting processes are totally controlled by automatic batching systems. Admixtures (retarders) are used for concreting in long distance site requirement. These admixtures decrease the rate of reaction of cement and other material in concrete - thus increasing the initial setting time of concrete while retaining its quality. With this delay in initial setting time, the concrete can be transported to long distances where the project site is far.

The temperature is controlled by use of temperature controlled admixtures for smaller requirements. In large scale project requirement like dams and power plant, the temperature is controlled by using ice partially in place of water. The output can be achieved as low as 10-12 degrees at plant with ice in concrete. In road projects, chilled water at 4-5 degrees are used in concrete against normal water to reduce the output temperature using a water chilling plant. The temperature can be controlled between 24-28 degrees with chilled water.
